HSGBB: Warriors can’t keep pace with top-ranked Eagles

Whale Branch girls basketball’s nine-game winning streak met its match Monday, as the Warriors couldn’t hang with top-ranked Military Magnet in a 48-26 road defeat.

The Eagles made a statement, opening with a 14-0 run in the first quarter and leading 22-6 at halftime before the Warriors found their rhythm on offense. Whale Branch pulled back within 11 going to the fourth quarter, but they couldn’t close the gap as the Eagles pulled away.

Erin Rivers scored 10 points to lead Whale Branch, while Layla Love and Kiana Smashum added five each. Military Magnet did a terrific job on prolific scorer Kynew Barnwell, holding her scoreless until her lone bucket in the fourth quarter.

Sabri Mitchell scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds, and Zanyah Sanders-Smith added 10 points for Military Magnet.

Whale Branch (16-7, 10-3) wraps up the regular season at Charleston Math & Science on Wednesday and will be the No. 2 seed from Region 7-1A in the Class 1A playoffs.
