HSBBB: Dolphins dodge upset scare from Rebels

Hilton Head Prep boys basketball endured its biggest challenge yet in region play, but the Dolphins were able to hold off a pesky Thomas Heyward team for a 52-44 road win Thursday.

The Rebels made it tough on the Dolphins with their physical play and man-to-man defense, but Prep was able to use its size advantage to crash the offensive glass and get to the rim. HHP clawed out to an 11-point halftime lead and bumped it up to 13 going to the fourth, but the Rebels found an extra gear in the final period and trimmed the deficit to single digits before coming up short.

It was another monster night for HHP big man Sean Cusano, who collected 23 points, 13 rebounds, and six blocks, and JJ Hayes was a beast on the boards, pulling down 17 rebounds to go with seven points and five assists. Kane Eanes added seven points and five boards for the Dolphins, and Andrew Helms scored seven.

Brandon Howard had another big game for THA with 18 points, six rebounds, and six assists, and Tony O’Banner added 13 points.

HHP (16-2, 8-0) has won 12 straight heading into a home matchup with rival Hilton Head Christian Academy on Friday. THA (11-7, 5-5) travels to Bethesda Academy on Friday.
