Colleton County boys basketball couldn’t catch up after a slow start on the road Tuesday, falling to James Island 78-51.

After feeling the sting of a tough road loss at Beaufort High on Friday, the Trojans bounced back quickly with a 20-point first quarter to take a 20-7 lead before extending the margin to 38-21 at halftime.
The Cougars continued to battle in the second half, but couldn’t slow down Cameron Smith and a motivated James Island squad.
Mykeem Gant led the Cougars with 13 points, Brian Hamilton put up 12, and Shawn Winfield also joined in double figures with 10.
Smith scored 21 points and Braxton Scott added 15 to lead James Island, which remained one game behind Beaufort High for the Region 7-4A lead.
Colleton County (5-13, 1-9) hosts Bluffton on Friday.
