HSBBB: Sharks ease away from Bobcats, bolster playoff hopes

May River boys basketball completed a season sweep of its crosstown rival and gave its playoff hopes a boost with a 51-32 win at Bluffton on Friday.

Garvin Douglas scored 14 points, Josh Evander added 13, and James Layman contributed 12 in a balanced effort for the Sharks, who jumped out to an 11-point lead after one quarter but saw the Bobcats claw within five by halftime.

The Sharks pulled away after the break to keep pace in a tight three-team race for the last two guaranteed playoff spots from Region 7-4A, though the fifth-place finisher is likely to earn an at-large berth. May River is a half-game behind Lucy Beckham and Hilton Head High and faces both the Bengals and Seahawks in its final three region games.

Nic Yanez scored 10 points, and Jaylin Linder and Adarion Ransburg added six each for the Bobcats.

Bluffton (4-13, 0-8) steps out of region play to host Effingham County on Tuesday. May River (11-7, 5-4) was back in action at home with a non-region game against Jenkins on Saturday.
