May River boys basketball controlled the pace in the first half, but visiting James Island hit its stride after the break Tuesday to surge to a 58-49 victory and stay undefeated in Region 7-4A with a season sweep of the Sharks.
The Sharks took a 20-18 advantage into halftime, frustrating James Island with its stifling team defense, but the Trojans were able to ratchet things up in the third quarter and pull out to a nine-point lead. After being held to one point in the first half, sophomore star Braxton Scott scored 10 points after the break.
Gavin Blocker came alive for the Sharks in the fourth quarter, putting up eight of his team-high 14 points, but James Island’s Cameron Nell matched him with eight of his 14 in the final period to help the Trojans hang on.
Blocker finished with 14 points, Garvin Douglas had 13, and James Layman scored nine for the Sharks. Nell had 14 and Scott added 11 for the Trojans.
May River (10-7, 4-4) travels to crosstown rival Bluffton on Friday needing a win to keep pace in a tightening race for a playoff spot, while James Island (12-6, 5-0) plays at Beaufort High in a matchup of the only teams with perfect region marks.
