HSBBB: Sharks hold off Cougars in Blocker battle

May River boys basketball bolted to a big lead with a 51-point first half, then held off a furious rally from host Colleton County for a 76-70 road win Thursday in Walterboro.

The Cougars led by three after eight minutes, but the Sharks exploded for 30 points in the second quarter to run out to a 51-32 halftime lead behind 20 first-half points from Gavin Blocker.

Colleton County trimmed the margin to 12 heading to the fourth and kept coming behind the red-hot shooting of Deshaun Blocker, who poured in 26 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter. Gavin Blocker still had a bit in the tank, though, scoring eight points in the fourth to finish with 31 and help the Sharks hang on.

James Layman added 17 points and Garvin Douglas had 10 for May River. Brian Hamilton and Mykeem Gant added 16 apiece for the Cougars.

May River (10-6, 4-3) hosts James Island on Tuesday. Colleton County (5-10, 1-6) hosts Lucy Beckham on Tuesday.
