Brandon Howard poured in 21 points, including a go-ahead four-point play in the fourth quarter, and Thomas Heyward boys basketball held off Hilton Head Christian Academy 46-39 on Tuesday to secure a crucial region win at home.
Howard announced his presence early and often, putting up eight points in the first period to pace the Rebels to a 13-5 lead. The Eagle offense came alive in the second with a terrific inside game from Isaiah Anderson and a pair of threes from Wells Sharpe, but Howard sank two triples of his own to keep Thomas Heyward up 26-19 heading into the break.
Hilton Head Christian continued to cut into the lead after halftime, as Anderson and Sharpe added five points each in the third quarter while big man Brady Bagenstose tacked on a pair of buckets to trim the margin to three. Sharpe continued to stay hot in the final quarter, banging his fourth triple of the game to knot it up at 35.
But Howard came to the rescue for Thomas Heyward, draining a three while being fouled and knocking down the free throw to complete a rare four-point play. It was all Rebels from there, as the Eagles struggled to find their offense down the stretch in an 11-4 game-ending run.
Howard was the man for Thomas Heyward, leading his squad with 21 points, 10 rebounds, five assists, and six steals. Tony O’ Banner added eight points, 10 boards, and four steals, and Tyshon Mansell added seven points.
Sharpe turned in an impressive showing with 18 points and four 3-pointers to lead HHCA, and Anderson put up 15 points.
Thomas Heyward (8-3 ,2-1) is right back in action on Wednesday in a non-region road contest at Dorchester Academy. Hilton Head Christian (3-9, 1-4) hosts Coastal Hurricanes on Thursday.
