HSBBB: Warriors fall short in defensive scrap with Pee Dee

A weary Whale Branch boys basketball team came up short in a defensive struggle Tuesday, falling 28-21 to Pee Dee Academy in the Class 1A Showcase at Carvers Bay High School.

The Warriors shut out the Eagles in the first quarter but managed only one bucket of their own from Queshawn Fields for a 2-0 lead. It was tied at halftime and knotted at 17 after three before Pee Dee pulled away in the fourth.

Hudson Spivey scored 13 points and Cameron Weston added 12 for Pee Dee, as the duo combined for all 11 points in the fourth quarter. Weston hit four 3-pointers in the second half, including two in the final period.

Jashaun Gillison scored eight points, and AJ Singleton had six for the Warriors.

Whale Branch (6-2) faces McCormick to wrap up the tournament Wednesday.
