HSBBB: Short-handed Sharks hang tight with Hornets

May River’s boys came up short Tuesday against another quality Georgia opponent, falling to visiting Savannah Country Day 66-59.

The Hornets opened the contest on a 13-11 run and stretched their advantage to 29-20 at the end of the half. May River fought back after halftime to knot the game at 41, but the Hornet offense exploded in the fourth to pull away.

With Garvin Douglas in Myrtle Beach participating in the Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl, Josh Evander stepped up to lead the Sharks, scoring 19 points including three shots from beyond the arc. James Layman put up 16 points including a pair of threes, and Gavin Blocker delivered 14 points. May River’s defense couldn’t hold down Savannah Country Day center Timo Moeller, who dominated inside with 26 points.

May River (3-3) looks to get back in the win column Friday at home against Ridgeland-Hardeeville.
