Hilton Head High’s hopes of earning a share of the region title evaporated — and they might have lost their star player for at least one game — in a 28-7 loss at James Island on Friday.
The Seahawks lost star quarterback and linebacker Jaylen Sneed in the fourth quarter when he suffered an upper body (arm/shoulder) injury and didn’t return. HHIHS coach BJ Payne said the injury was not career-threatening and Sneed will be evaluated Saturday, but he is not expected to be available for next week’s game at May River, which now has no bearing on the final region standings.
James Island continued its outstanding recent play on defense, holding the Seahawks without an offensive touchdown. Hilton Head High’s only score came when Matthew Larkby recovered a botched punt snap for a score.
Hilton Head’s defense did a solid job most of the night, but the Trojans were able to hit big three plays — two through the air and one on the ground — for quick-strike scores, and the James Island defense added a scoop-and-score to its stellar night.
HHIHS (3-5, 2-2) hosts region champion May River in next week’s season finale.
