USCB women’s soccer couldn’t recover from an early deficit at home Sunday, dropping a 3-1 decision to Georgia Gwinnett at Fin Land Field to close out the non-conference schedule.
The Grizzlies got the early jump on the home side, controlling the possession and putting two early shots on goal. They eventually broke through in the 26th minute, as Kyara Armenta found a seam through the defense before lofting the ball into the net to open the scoring.
USCB’s leading goalscorer, Mari Kalvatn, nearly equalized just eight minutes later, scorching a shot on target that was saved by Matilda Johansson. The Grizzlies added another before the halftime break, as Ana Da Costa knocked in a header off a Lena Black free kick to go up 2-0.
Narissa Gaither kept the goals coming for Georgia Gwinnett just two minutes into the second half, sizzling a shot past Mariah Ruckdeschel for a 3-0 lead. The Sand Sharks got on the scoreboard in the 53rd minute, as a Kalvatn corner found Madison Foshee, who headed the ball into the net. USCB had a chance to cut into the lead further with a 70th-minute free kick, but Henriette Harr-Haga’s terrific bid sailed inches over the crossbar.
The Sand Sharks couldn’t create enough chances in the final minutes, as Georgia Gwinnett’s defense locked down the road win.
USCB (6-3) begins conference play on the road Thursday at Florida Memorial.
