HSFB: Late TD lifts Red Devils past Seahawks

Another week, another Lowco team losing a heartbreaker to Wade Hampton.

The Red Devils scored the go-ahead touchdown with 26 seconds left to stun visiting Hilton Head High 28-24 on Friday, as Jamian Risher scored a pair of rushing touchdowns and connected with Robert Clark for a pair of scores, offsetting three touchdown runs from Seahawks star Jaylen Sneed.

Wade Hampton led 14-6 at halftime before Chase McCracken cut into the deficit with a 6-yard touchdown run, but the Seahawks’ two-point attempt failed. After Risher and the Red Devils answered, Sneed added two more short touchdown runs to give Hilton Head a 24-21 lead with 4:35 remaining.

After pulling off unlikely wins over May River and Bluffton the past two weeks, the Red Devils still had a little fourth-quarter magic left. Risher hit Clark for a 40-yard gain on fourth down to set up the Red Devil quarterback’s 1-yard touchdown run for the win.

Sneed racked up 109 yards on 12 carries with three touchdowns and went 7-of-14 for 43 yards, and he amassed an incredible 21 tackles and broke up a pass to anchor a solid defensive showing against Risher and the Red Devils. McCracken matched Sneed with 109 yards on 17 carries and snagged two passes for 23 yards. Chris Marable had 11 tackles (two for loss), and KJ Holland added 10 tackles for the Seahawks.

Risher rushed 30 times for 184 yards and two TDs and was 4-of-8 for 151 yards and two scores through the air. Clark had three catches for 145 yards for the Red Devils.

The Seahawks (1-3) open region play at Beaufort High on Friday, while the Red Devils (5-0) travel to Silver Bluff for a matchup of unbeaten teams.
