WSOC: Kalvatn converts as Sand Sharks secure 3rd straight shutout

Mari Kalvatn scored the game’s only goal in the 31st minute, lifting USCB women’s soccer to a 1-0 home victory over Brewton-Parker on Thursday at Fin Land Field.

Despite a flurry of miscues early leading to seven Baron shots in the opening minutes, the Sand Sharks grabbed the lead late in the first half thanks to their top goalscorer. Synne Bye-Andersen navigated through the defense on the right-hand side and sent a cross into the penalty area. The home team couldn’t connect on the first heading attempt, but the ball came to Kalvatn, who buried a shot inside the left post to open the scoring and notch her 11th goal of the season.

USCB’s defense was terrific after halftime, shutting down the Barons in the offensive end while goalkeeper Mariah Ruckdeshel came up clutch with several excellent saves. The Sand Sharks controlled the possession in the final minutes to see out the 1-0 shutout victory.

Ruckdeshel was sensational in net, making eight saves to earn her second clean sheet of the season.

USCB (6-2) battles Georgia Gwinnett at home Sunday to conclude the non-conference slate.
