WSOC: Sand Sharks blank Knights, edge Erskine

USCB women’s soccer earned two road wins in two days behind three Mari Kalvatn goals, blanking St. Andrew’s 5-0 on Friday before topping Erskine 2-1 on Saturday.

Five different Sand Sharks found the back of the net against St. Andrew’s to notch a second straight shutout victory. Madeline Matusak opened the scoring in the 37th minute on a Gabriella Baldo assist. The goals came in bunches after halftime, as USCB added two in just four minutes thanks to Kalvatn and Isabella Jakobs. After assisting on the Kalvatn tally, Damaris Gaines found the back of the net to make the score 4-0. Just two minutes later, Lexi Kaeser capped off the stellar day with a goal on a Kalvatn assist.

The Sand Sharks stormed the net all game long, outshooting the Knights 27-5. Goalkeeper Emily Worrell stopped all five shots she faced to earn a second straight clean sheet.

Kalvatn continued her stellar weekend on Saturday, scoring both goals to lead USCB to a 2-1 win over Erskine. Despite having two early goals taken off the board on an offside and a handball, the Sand Sharks came through in the 26th minute on the Norwegian’s second of the weekend.

USCB suffered a devastating blow in the closing seconds of the first half, as Erskine’s Brittiney Gardner scored with just five seconds left to even the match at 1-1. But Kalvatn struck again in the 57th minute, netting her third goal of the weekend to break the tie. With the game-winning tally, Kalvatn’s 22nd career goal puts her just one back from a tie for second in the program’s career scoring list (Anna Gignilliat).

Worrell picked up another victory in net, making three saves to hold off the Flying Fleet.

USCB (3-1) will take a week off from action before a trip to No. 20 Cumberland on Sunday.
