HSFB: Seahawks can’t hang with inspired Diamond Hornets

Hilton Head High couldn’t keep up with an impressive Lower Richland side on Friday, falling on the road 35-6 to open the season.

With quarterback Robert Adams taking the field after the loss of his father alongside the recent passing of legendary Lower Richland and New England Patriots receiver David Patten, the Diamond Hornets delivered an inspired performance on both sides of the ball on their home field.

After a Lower Richland score opened the contest, senior Seahawk Chase McCracken broke away from the defense and stormed into the end zone for a 30-yard touchdown run before a blocked extra point kept the score at 7-6. But the Diamond Hornets answered back early in the second quarter, punching the ball in from the 1-yard-line to extend the lead to 14-6. Lower Richland tacked on another touchdown to cap off the first half and kept the dominance rolling in the final two quarters, adding two more trips to the end zone while holding the Seahawks off the board to wrap up the 35-6 victory.

The Diamond Hornets honored Patten with a moment of silence prior to the contest. After finishing his college career at Western Carolina in 1996, the Lower Richland legend won three Super Bowls under Bill Belichick before returning to the Catamounts as an assistant coach in 2013.
