Led by stellar All-American performances from Iyana McKeever and Shamar Deacon, the USCB men’s and women’s outdoor track teams impressed at the NAIA Championships from Wednesday through Friday at Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
After fantastic indoor and outdoor campaigns, McKeever capped off the 2021 track season in style, earning a spot in the 100m finals with a blazing 11.76 before clocking in at 11.77 to notch a seventh-place finish and All-America honors. The senior did it again in the triple jump, recording a leap of 12.42m to take fourth place. McKeever added a strong showing in the long jump to her week, posting a mark of 5.36m to finish 20th.
Deacon joined McKeever with All-America honors in the meet, posting a standout time of 48.06s in the men’s 400m to qualify for the finals before placing eighth in the championship heat at 48.07s. Kadari Mitchell put together a strong meet, taking 17th in the men’s 200m (21.72s) and coming in 24th in the 100m (10.64s). Mel Obadiah Jr. notched a 10th-place finish in the men’s 800m with a spectacular time of 1:52.99 while Oriana Hernandez also took 10th with a fantastic mark of 1:04.00 in the 400m hurdles.
USCB’s relay team of Mitchell, Obadiah, Deacon, and Sam Williams displayed a brilliant encore to a sensational season, posting a time of 3:14.34 in the 4x400m relay and finishing in 10th place while besting the previous program record they set just two weeks ago.
