USCB’s men’s 4×400 relay team seized the opportunity in Cleveland, Tennessee, on Saturday, punching its ticket to the NAIA National Championships and rewriting the program record books to lead the Sand Sharks at the Lee Last Chance Meet.
The team of Kadari Mitchell, Mel Obadiah Jr., Sam Williams, and Shamar Deacon combined for a blazing time of 3:16.25, besting the NAIA B standard while shattering the school record by over three seconds.
Iyana McKeever excelled in the women’s triple jump, taking third place with a mark of 11.97m. The stellar senior continued her strong showing in the 100m sprint, clocking in at 11.99s to come in sixth. Oriana Hernandez also notched a sixth-place finish in the women’s 400m, crossing the line with a time of 1:04.52, while Deacon capped off the day with a solid performance in the men’s 200m at 22.54s.
The Sand Sharks will now prepare for the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which will run from May 26-28 at the Mickey Miller Blackwell Stadium in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
