Hilton Head Prep baseball’s remarkable season came to an end Wednesday, falling 11-6 at Cardinal Newman in the SCISA 3A Lower Bracket championship.
The Dolphins grabbed an early 3-1 lead in the second inning on RBI hits from Phoenix Betancourt, Payce Gartner, and Jaiden Hrobar, but the Cardinals stormed right back with six runs in the home half to take control of the contest at 7-3.
Hilton Head Prep continued to battle, cutting the lead to a single run thanks to a Reese Malon three-run bomb in the fourth, but Parker Hocutt landed the decisive blow for the Cardinals in the bottom of the fifth, launching a grand slam to swell the lead to 11-6.
HHP couldn’t take back the momentum, as Matthew Hafner sat down the final nine Dolphins in order to clinch the Lower Bracket championship.
Betancourt was fantastic at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI while Malon added a three-run homer on his lone hit of the game. Gartner and Tommy Stauffer collected a pair of hits each, and Connor McDonnell tossed an inning and two-thirds of one-hit ball to keep his team in striking distance.
Hilton Head Prep finishes the season with an outstanding mark of 24-2.
