USCB baseball completed a phenomenal 6-0 homestand Tuesday, sweeping a doubleheader with Brewton-Parker 6-2 and 13-3 at Richard Gray Stadium.
The visiting Barons took an early 2-0 first-inning lead in game one, but it was all Sand Sharks from then on. Leandy Castro crushed the very first pitch he saw in the bottom half to quickly trim the lead in half. With the solo shot, the senior picked up his eighth home run of the campaign to move into a tie for fourth place for the program’s most in a single season.
USCB grabbed its first lead of the day in the bottom of the fourth, as Nick Milhan smacked an RBI double before crossing the plate on a wild pitch to go up 3-2. Brewton-Parker looked to respond in the fifth with a two-out rally to load the bases, but Andre Sasseville forced a popup to escape the jam and keep the lead intact.
The Sand Sharks then scored three runs in the home half thanks to a two-out, two-RBI double by Alexander Humphrey and another run-scoring single from Milhan to surge ahead 6-2. USCB closer Eamonn Collins shut the door on the mound, pitching a scoreless seventh to clinch the game one win.
Castro was dazzling at the dish, going 3-for-4 with a solo homer and two singles. Milhan was 2-for-3 with a double and pair of RBIs, and Humphrey plated two runs. Glenn Williams was fantastic out of the bullpen, throwing two no-hit innings and adding two strikeouts while Griffin Cassell notched the win with a scoreless fourth.
USCB got the offense rolling early in the rematch, exploding for seven runs in the second inning. Tim Wood and Wesley Ambrose connected on a pair of RBI-singles to plate the first two Sand Shark runs, Russ kept the line moving with a run-scoring knock, and Humphery unloaded a bases-clearing double to drive in three. Milhan finished off the scoring on an RBI-single to give his squad a commanding 7-0 lead.
The Sand Sharks kept the scorching offense going, scoring two runs in each of the next three innings to build a 13-3 advantage. Jacob Judy and DJ Lawler finished the job at the mound, shutting down the Barons in the final two innings to complete the spectacular sweep of Brewton-Parker and a 6-0 homestand.
Humphrey delivered a phenomenal performance at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBI. Ambrose, Russ, and Tavaris Terrell all collected two hits, and Castro drove in three runs. Javier Saenz set the tone from the mound, throwing four strong innings and allowing just two runs while striking out five Barons.
USCB (18-12, 5-7) looks to take the momentum on the road in a Sun Conference weekend series at Thomas.
