May River’s Darin Horn struck out 13 batters over six innings and delivered three hits at the plate to lead the Sharks to a 5-1 win at rival Bluffton in Region 7-4A baseball action Monday.
Horn mowed down the Bobcats for six frames, allowing just three hits and one unearned run, and Bennett Roemer struck out the side in a perfect seventh to finish it off for the Sharks.
May River opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the second, then added one on Riley Stokes’ RBI single in the fourth. Bluffton pulled one back in the bottom of the fourth, taking advantage of a pair of walks and a passed ball before Jayden Timmins came through with an RBI single to cut the margin to 3-1.
Horn added to the cushion with an RBI double in the sixth and his courtesy runner came around to score on a pair of wild pitches. The future Coastal Carolina right-hander then struck out the side in order in the sixth, and Roemer followed suit in the seventh to end the threat.
Horn was 3-for-3 with an RBI double, Stokes went 1-for-3 and drove in two runs, and Walker Taylor had a triple for May River.
Cody Bradt, Grant Musselman, and Timmins had singles for the Bobcats. Musselman took the loss despite a solid outing, allowing three runs (two earned) over five innings with six hits, five strikeouts, and two walks.
The Sharks (3-5, 1-2) host the Bobcats (0-3, 0-3) for the series finale Wednesday.
