Beaufort Academy softball claimed its first win since the rebirth of a long-dormant program — a 21-6 rout of crosstown rival Bridges on Tuesday — and dedicated it to a pair of departed teammates and friends.
BA students Anna Grace Dennis and Emily Wilson were instrumental in bringing softball back to BA before both tragically died in 2019. Dennis died after an epileptic seizure in August 2019, and Wilson was killed a car accident just four months later.
The fledgling program struggled through the 2019 season — its first since a brief two-year stint in 2007 and 2008 — and had the 2020 campaign cut short to the COVID-19 pandemic.
But on Tuesday, the Eagles tasted the glory that Dennis and Wilson sought on the softball field.
Chase Vaigneur went 1-for-2 with a triple and three RBIs, Riley Gates added a hit, and the Eagles took advantage of wild pitching and defensive miscues to rack up runs.
Olivia Dinkins took care of the rest, pitching all three innings with one strikeout for the win.
