Thomas Heyward baseball erupted for 11 runs in the fifth to break open a tight game and run-rule John Paul II 16-6 at home on Wednesday for the Rebels’ first win of the season.
JPII grabbed an early 4-2 lead in the third inning with RBI tallies from Hayden Jennings, Rance Jennings, and Christian Tilton before Heyward plated a pair in the bottom half to knot it at 4. The Golden Warriors surged ahead 6-4 in the fourth with a clutch two-out double by Landry Donoth, but the visitors ran out of steam late, surrendering 12 unanswered Thomas Heyward runs including 11 in the fifth to end the game.
John Hewlett paced a flaming-hot Rebel offense, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs including a pair of knocks in the decisive fifth. Carter Zareva collected two hits for Heyward, and Peyton Bennett drove in three runs capped off by a line-drive two-RBI single in the final frame.
Nick Wise held the Golden Warriors off the board to spark the big offensive push, throwing 1 ⅔ innings of scoreless ball while allowing just one hit.
Hayden Jennings continued his stellar start for John Paul II, going 2-for-3 and picking up an RBI.
Thomas Heyward (1-3, 1-1) travels to Memorial Day on Tuesday.
John Paul II (1-2, 1-1) hosts Hilton Head Christian on March 11.
