Hilton Head Prep started what figures to be a promising baseball season with an impressive 21-1 rout of visiting Thomas Heyward Academy on Monday afternoon.
The Dolphins plated nine runs in the first and 12 in the second to make quick work of the Rebels, while Reese Malon and Steele Burd combined on a three-hit gem in a three-inning contest.
“It felt great to finally be back on the diamond and get this season underway,” HHP coach Chris Wells said.
Seven Dolphins recorded multiple hits, with Malon (2-for-2, 2B, 3 RBIs) and Gunnar Bonomo (2-for-2, 2 2B, 3 RBIs) leading the way. Christian Bueso was 2-for-2 with two doubles and two RBIs, Tristan Bonomo went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, and Jaiden Hrobar, Phoenix Betancourt, and Connor McDonnell added two hits apiece for HHP. Tommy Stauffer added a double and two RBIs, and Burd drove in two.
Malon struck out one and walked one while allowing three hits and one unearned run over two innings, and Burd struck out the side and issued one walk in the third.
Dietrich Shuford, Jeremy Clemmer, and Peyton Bennett each had a hit for the Rebels.
HHP (1-0) hosts rival Hilton Head Christian Academy at 3:30 p.m. Thursday.
THA (0-3) hosts John Paul II for a region matchup Wednesday.
