Beaufort Academy’s girls defeated Pee Dee Academy 59-50 in the first round of the SCISA 2A playoffs Friday, holding off a comeback while star Mike’Ala Washington was saddled with foul trouble.
Tahleea Heyward led the Eagles with 15 points and Washington added 11.
Washington’s scoring and stellar defensive play led BA to a 13-7 advantage after the first quarter. Kamirah Freeman had the hot hand in the second quarter, propelling the Eagles to a seven-point halftime lead.

Washington got into early foul trouble in the first half, forcing her teammates to step up in the second half. Heyward delivered in the third quarter and helped extend the lead to nine going into the final period, but Washington was on the bench with four fouls.
Pee Dee pulled within 48-45, and it looked like BA was in trouble, but the Eagles were able to regain the momentum and hold onto their lead in the closing minutes to advance.
Beaufort Academy will play Spartanburg Christian in the second round of the SCISA 2A playoffs at 2 p.m. Monday at Sumter Civic Center.
