New region, same result for the May River wrestling team. The Sharks wrapped up the Region 7-4A title with a pair of convincing wins at home Wednesday, routing James Island 74-3 and capping the night with a 61-14 victory over Hilton Head High.
Nine wrestlers went 2-0 for the Sharks — Isaiah Wysong, EJ Seman, Isham Peace, Santiago Rueda, Jaxson Merriwether, Gabe Juarez, Wyatt Banfield, Eli Hall, and Billy Hall — and May River racked up 11 pins against the Trojans and nine more against the Seahawks. May River dropped just one match against James Island and three against HHIHS, going 24-4 on the night.

The showdown with the Seahawks was competitive early, as Chase McCracken and James Levy scored major decisions and Zao Estrada recorded a first-period pin to pull HHIHS within 15-14 despite pins from Patrick Treacy and Eli Hall and an inspiring win from Billy Hall at 285. Then the Sharks ran off eight straight wins to close out the night, including four straight pins to slam the door.
Most of the Sharks’ and Seahawks’ stars didn’t align, but one marquee matchup took shape at 132 pounds, where defending state champion Isham Peace of May River pinned state qualifier Drew Vigh in the second period.
The Seahawks started the night with a 59-18 win over James Island, piling up seven pins along with a technical fall and injury default. Estrada and Levy both went 2-0 for Hilton Head High, while Peter Rougeaux, Vigh, Darnell Browner, Alex Ruckno, and Jimmy Jacobs recorded pins against the Trojans. Devon Espinosa won by injury default, and Sean Welch scored a technical fall.
May River will host the Region 7-4A meet Saturday.
