HSGBB: HHCA suffers first defeat vs. state power Cardinals

Hilton Head Christian Academy’s girls searched far and wide for the biggest challenges they could face this season, and they were up to every task — until Wednesday.

The Eagles finally took on more than they could handle in SCISA 3A power Cardinal Newman, falling 68-48 to MaxPrep’s top-ranked girls team in South Carolina across all classifications.

The Cardinals blitzed the Eagles out of the gate, racing out to a 23-10 lead after one quarter before HHCA settled in. Abby Peduzzi and Devon Yarde knocked down jumpers to close out the half and pull the Eagles within 35-23 at halftime.

Cardinal Newman’s size and post presence was too much for the Eagles, though, as Skyla Tuthill put up 16 points and Ashlyn Watkins added 12 for the Cardinals.

Peduzzi scored 13 points, and Mary Yanker and Molly Smith added eight each for HHCA.

The Eagles (14-1) travel to Pinewood Christian on Friday.
