After going into the holiday break undefeated, John Paul II’s boys stayed that way in their return to the court Tuesday, but barely.
Mark Knight poured in 27 points to go with seven rebounds and five steals to lead the Golden Warriors to a hard-fought 58-56 win over visiting Hilton Head Christian Academy to open the calendar year and the region slate.

JPII found itself in an early hole, as J.P. Peduzzi and Wells Sharpe got hot for HHCA. Peduzzi racked up 18 points, five rebounds, and four assists, and Sharpe poured in four 3-pointers and added another bucket for a total of 14 points.
But Knight took over and led JPII back from the early deficit, while Jeremiah Young and Jackson Ogden each added 12 points, and Austin McIntosh collected 10 boards to help the Golden Warriors hang on.
JPII (6-0, 1-0) will host another region game against Beaufort Academy on Friday. 8. On the same day, the Eagles (2-4, 0-2) will travel to Thomas Heyward for another region battle.
