Hilton Head Christian Academy’s undefeated girls basketball team faced one of the biggest remaining hurdles on its schedule Wednesday in Savannah, and the Eagles cleared it, beating previously unbeaten Georgia Class 6A power Richmond Hill 59-48 in the Savannah Country Day Showcase.
The Wildcats asserted themselves early, racing out to a 17-8 lead after one quarter before HHCA turned it on. The Eagles reeled off a 21-5 run to take a seven-point lead into halftime, but they still had to work to hold off a tough Richmond Hill squad that already has swept Hilton Head High this season.

Richmond Hill recovered and closed within one going to the fourth quarter, but freshman guard Devon Yarde was able to use her quickness to break down the Wildcats’ press and create scoring opportunities for her teammates, who took advantage and propelled the Eagles to the big win.
Dior Shelton scored 16 points to lead a balanced HHCA attack, while Yarde, Abby Peduzzi, and Molly Smith added nine each, and Mary Yanker and Skylar Smith each had eight. Peduzzi and Yanker helped control the boards for the Eagles along with Mackenzie Buchter.
HHCA (9-0) plays a region game at John Paul II on Tuesday.
