HSBBB: Creek stays perfect with tough win over BA

Battery Creek’s boys have nearly doubled their win total from coach CJ Brown’s inaugural season a year ago. They haven’t even put a dent in the loss total.

A year after winning only three games in Brown’s head coaching debut at his alma mater, the Dolphins are one of the last remaining undefeated teams in the Lowco after improving to 5-0 with a 66-56 home win over Beaufort Academy on Tuesday.

The backcourt trio of David Smith, Rashard Baker, and Jordon Rivers has led the way thus far — and they combined for 44 points in the win over BA — but there has been a different unsung hero every game it seems.

In Friday’s hard-fought 70-64 win over visiting Denmark-Olar, it was Justin Smalls who gave the Dolphins a boost off the bench with 12 points, six rebounds, and four steals in 12 minutes, but in Tuesday’s contest it was Jaeon Allen who stepped up. Allen dominated inside against BA, racking up 16 points, 10 rebounds, and six steals in what was by far his best performance of the season.

BA had a shot to hand the Dolphins their first defeat, at one point trimming the margin to four points in the fourth quarter behind 19 points from Ben VanHise, 13 from Elijah Fess, and seven from Ben Frey, but Creek was able to close it out.

The Dolphins (5-0) will try to double last season’s win total when they travel to May River for a non-region matchup at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

The Eagles (4-5) have dropped five straight on the court but have picked up two forfeit victories over that stretch, including one against two-time defending SCISA 1A champion Clarendon Hall, which forfeited Friday’s scheduled contest. BA won the first meeting, 73-63 in Summerton, to open the season.
