John Paul II’s inexperienced girls team got its first taste of life after Tkai DeVore on Tuesday, opening the season with a 54-34 home loss to the Coastal Hurricanes.
The Golden Warriors went 22-5 a year ago but graduated four starters including DeVore, the three-time region Player of the Year, so they’re looking for a new crop of leaders.

Freshman Cayce Graves rose to the challenge Tuesday, leading the way with 11 points, while Maddie Heathcott added 10.
“We learned a lot tonight,” JPII coach Karen Floyd said. “These girls are fighters and will grow tremendously with experience and time to jell as a team.”
JPII (0-1) hosts Bridges at 6 p.m. Thursday.
