HSVB: Dolphins down JPII, drop two in Savannah

Hilton Head Prep volleyball made quick work of region rival John Paul II in a home match Monday, but the Dolphins weren’t able to sustain their success in a pair of non-region losses in Savannah on Tuesday.

The Dolphins used a three-pronged attack in a 3-0 (25-4, 25-21, 25-13) win over the Golden Warriors, as Ashley Wilmot, Gracie Palumbo-Alkire, and Madison Denny each collected seven kills.

Ella Clark served five aces and dished out 12 assists, Gabby Bettez added 10 assists, Annie Braun picked up a team-high 19 digs, and Haylee Hopman added 17 digs and three aces.

The next night, the Dolphins were overmatched in a 2-0 (25-14, 25-16) loss to host Savannah Christian and a tough 2-1 (25-15, 23-25, 15-12) loss to Calvary Day.

HHP had a tough time getting in rhythm against the Raiders, collecting only nine kills — four by Denny. The Dolphins played much better against the Cavaliers before dropping a heartbreaker. Denny and Wilmot each had 10 kills, Hopman picked up 17 digs, and Bettez dished out 14 assists.

HHP (9-3, 4-1) hosts Colleton Prep for a key region match at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
