SB: Sharks go 1-1 on first day at Byrnes Invitational

May River softball split a pair of games Friday at the Byrnes Invitational, doubling up Greer 14-7 and falling 5-4 to Chapin. 

The Sharks plated seven runs in the fifth inning to break open a tied game against Greer, and Ana Carabello shut out the Yellow Jackets in the bottom of the inning. Carabello allowed six runs (four earned) over 4 ⅓ innings to earn the win, striking out six and walking three. 

Giovana Rodriguez hit a three-run homer and scored three times, and Olivia Turpin was 2-for-3 with a double, two RBIs, and three runs to lead the Sharks at the plate. Lexi Birtcher added two hits and two RBIs, and Caleigh Powell was 2-for-3 with an RBI. 

May River was on the other end of an exciting finish in its second game, tying the contest in the top of the fifth before Chapin scored a walk-off win in the bottom of the frame. Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with a two-run homer, and Peyton Rockwell went 2-for-3 with an RBI for the Sharks. Kylee Gleason also added two this. 

Carabello took the loss in relief of Rodriguez, who gave up four runs (three earned) in 3 ⅔ innings with four strikeouts and four walks.

The Sharks (3-1) are back in action in the tournament Saturday, facing Liberty.
