HSWR: Sharks send 10 to semis at 3A Lower State

The host team will be well-represented in the semifinals of the Class 3A Lower State wrestling qualifier Saturday, as host May River has wrestlers in the semis of 10 of the 14 weight classes.

The Sharks (62) have a one-point lead over second-place Gilbert, and May River has 10 wrestlers in the championship semifinals — two more than the Indians. Battery Creek (27) is tied for seventh and has three wrestlers in the semis.

May River’s Miguel Cavalheiro (138) and Donovan Ling (182) each went 2-0 to reach the semifinals, while EJ Seman (106), Isham Peace (113), Chad Hadden (120), Mike Sunkins (132), Anthony Nelsen (145), Gabriel Juarez (152), Anthon Funderburk (170), and Eli Hall (220) each went 1-0 following a first-round bye.

Battery Creek has three wrestlers in the semifinals — Sam DeGroat (106), Johan Linares (126), and Larson McManigle (145).

Wrestling resumes Saturday morning with the championship semifinals, followed by consolation rounds and the finals. The top four wrestlers in each weight class qualify for the state championships next weekend in Anderson.
