HSGBB: Seahawks step up on D for first region win

Hilton Head High’s girls broke through for their first region win Friday, building a big early lead and holding on for a 40-37 overtime victory over visiting Colleton County.

Miley Ray scored 19 points, Kenzie Ryan added nine, and Janiya Ferrebee had six to lead the Seahawks.

“We were good enough offensively and great defensively,” HHIHS coach Sean Rochester said. “For whatever reason, we had lost some defensive intensity over the past week, but tonight we found it again. Omari Kirkland is an all-region player, one of the best players in our region, and we collectively held her without a field goal. It was a lot of Anna Genova and Kenzie Ryan, but it’s also their teammates helping them.”

With the Seahawks’ win coupled with Bluffton’s win over Beaufort High, HHIHS pulls into a three-way tie for second place in Region 7-4A.
