HSGBB: Eagles turn up heat on JPII in 2nd half

It was an offensive clinic in the first half, and a defensive one in the second. The Hilton Head Christian Academy girls did it on both ends Friday night, rolling visiting John Paul II 63-33.

The Eagles found success right from the tip, scoring 19 points in the first quarter, and walked back into the locker room leading 37-24.

“We got five or six girls who are really offensively sound,” HHCA coach Kenny Conroy said. “We saw what the defense was leaving open and made some jumpers. We’re very strong inside and outside and a tough matchup for anyone who plays us.”

After Tkai DeVore and the Golden Warriors scored in bunches in the first half, they were stopped cold in the third period, as the Eagles held them to just a single bucket, cruising to the finish on a 26-9 run.

“I got on them about defense in the locker room,” Conroy said. “No team should score that many points on us in the first half, and Tkai had 15. I challenged them in the locker room to play their best defense.”

Jasmine Campbell led the way with an impressive stat line of 24 points and 17 rebounds. Dior Shelton was right behind her with 21 points, and Abby Peduzzi scored nine points, making some key jumpers early.

JPII coach Karen Floyd was proud of her team putting up a good fight against the Eagles.

“I love their sportsmanship and never-give-up attitude,” she said.

DeVore proved once again that she can play against anyone, scoring 20 points and pulling down seven rebounds. Jasmine Hamilton corralled six rebounds, dished out six assists, and added solid defense for the Golden Warriors.
