Candor USA Lowco Wrestling Spotlight, Dec. 9

Each Monday throughout the high school wrestling season, we will recognize the standouts from the previous week’s action.

We will select two Wrestlers of the Week — one in the lower weights (106-145) and one in the upper weights (152-285) — as well as a Team of the Week and the spotlight match or tournament of the coming week.

Here’s your first installment of the Lowco Wrestling Spotlight presented by Candor USA.

LOWER WEIGHTS WRESTLER OF THE WEEK
Isham Peace, MRHS

The Sharks’ junior 113-pounder made quite a splash in his debut, winning the May River Invitational in impressive fashion. A transfer from Walton-Verona High School in northern Kentucky, Peace was a two-time state qualifier in the Bluegrass State and placed sixth last year. He established himself as an instant state title contender in his Palmetto State debut, winning all three of his matches by pin, including a decisive victory over Hilton Head High’s James Levy — last year’s Class 4A runner-up at 106 pounds — in the finals.

UPPER WEIGHTS WRESTLER OF THE WEEK
Cam’ron Darby, Bluffton

Darby was one of the biggest surprises of the weekend with his win in the 285-pound weight class, though he didn’t have to face May River’s Kailin Prescott-Ferguson, a returning state qualifier whose start to the season was delayed by the Sharks’ football playoff run. Still, the sophomore heavyweight took care of business at the May River Invitational, going 3-0 and scoring pins in the semifinals and finals.

TEAM OF THE WEEK
Beaufort High

The Eagles were the area’s highest-finishing team at the May River Invitational, placing fourth and boasting three individual champs, more than any other team. James Dagin (160), Michael Cenci (170), and Jeremiah Simmons (195) all won titles Saturday, and Cenci was also 2-0 with a pin when Beaufort opened its season at the Summerville Quad last Monday, going 2-1 with the lone defeat coming against Class 5A No. 6 Summerville.

MATCH OF THE WEEK
Beaufort High at May River, 6:30 p.m. Wednesday

The clear-cut top two teams in the area go head to head Wednesday night at The Tank. May River is ranked third in Class 3A, while Beaufort is No. 5 in Class 4A. The Eagles finished ahead of the Sharks at the May River Invitational over the weekend, but May River should be closer to full strength Wednesday, and the dual meet format is a different beast. This one should be fun.
