May River’s girls used their signature stifling defense to defeat visiting Beaufort High 46-28 on Tuesday in both teams’ season opener.
Gracyn Drury scored 12 points, Jordan Bigham had 10, and Chynna Sneed added 7 for the Sharks, who didn’t allow more than 11 points in a quarter and held the Eagles to single digits in three periods.
May River led 23-9 at halftime, before Beaufort’s Layla Warren heated up in the second half and finished with 14 points. Sequoia Smalls added 5 points for the Eagles.
The Sharks (1-0) travel to crosstown rival Bluffton at 6 p.m. Friday. The Eagles (0-1) host Summerville at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
