HSBB: DeVore’s bucket lifts JPII to tourney title

Tkai DeVore capped a big night with a buzzer-beater to lift John Paul II’s girls to a 33-31 win over Pinewood Christian on Tuesday in the championship game of the St. Vincent’s Thanksgiving Tournament in Savannah.

DeVore knocked down a shot at the buzzer to give the Golden Warriors the win, finishing with 19 points and 11 rebounds in a defensive struggle.

JPII jumped out to an early lead and was in command at halftime, but with only six players in the rotation, the Golden Warriors wore down in the second half and allowed Pinewood Christian to get back in it.

The Patriots tied it at 31 with 25 seconds left, but DeVore held for the last shot before driving the lane with 4 seconds left and hitting the game-winner.

“Our defense came up big again tonight,” JPII coach Karen Floyd said. “I could not be more proud of our effort and sportsmanship.”

Jasmine Hamilton scored 6 points for the Golden Warriors, and Katie Leigh Floyd and Bella Termini each added 4.

JPII (4-0) is off until hosting Bridges Prep on Dec. 4.
