It’s been a tough go in the early season for the high school football teams north of the Broad River, with only Whale Branch posting a winning record so far this season, but things are starting to look up.
Tons of RBC Heritage Player of the Week love was centered on Beaufort this week, as both our panel and the online voters showed up to support players from that side of the river.
Beaufort High is still looking for its first win of the year, but the Eagles picked up a “W” in our fan voting this week, as quarterback Tyler Haley earned 28.75% of the vote, edging runner-up Stone McDonald (19.92%) of Hilton Head Prep.
And Beaufort Academy finally enjoyed its first win since last year’s SCISA 8-man state championship game, crushing Northside Christian. For his efforts in the win — six carries for 232 yards and two TDs, and four tackles (three for loss) — Elijah Fess earned a spot on the ballot … and three votes from our panel.
I was the only voter to go a different direction, casting my vote for Hilton Head Christian Academy quarterback Hayden Shinn, who earlier this week was named one of three SCISA Players of the Week.
But it’s sure hard to argue against Fess and his 38.7 yards per carry average. A deserving RBC Heritage Player of the Week, to be sure.
