Soccer: Sand Sharks drop league opener

USCB women’s soccer dropped its Sun Conference opener Saturday in Miami, falling 3-0 to host Johnson & Wales.

The Wildcats opened the scoring with a penalty kick from Andrea Gomez in the 35th minute and added a back-breaking second goal just 25 seconds later when Sawyer Hall finished off a cross from Savannah Jackson.

Hall added a penalty kick goal in the second half, and the Sand Sharks were unable to get anything past JWU goalkeeper Denise Mendoza, who made six saves.

JWU was able to limit the opportunities for USCB leading scorer Anna Gignilliat, who had seven shots but did not put any on frame.

The Sand Sharks (4-4, 0-1 TSC) host top-ranked Keiser at noon Saturday at Fin Land Field on USCB’s Bluffton Campus.
