HSFB: Bobcats Come Up Short In Shootout With Gamecocks

From the first play to the last, Screven County (Ga.) and Bluffton put on a show on opening night for the second consecutive year, as the Gamecocks escaped with a 44-41 overtime win.

Screven County’s Gary Hawkins went 80 yards on the first play from scrimmage — the first of his five rushing touchdowns — to set the tone for a shootout that ended with a game-winning 22-yard field goal for the Gamecocks.

Lee Kirkland threw four touchdown passes and ran for another TD for the Bobcats. Rakim White hauled in two TD passes, including a 16-yard strike on the final play of regulation to force overtime, and returned a kickoff 75 yards for a score. Kylan Simmons and Robert Brown also had touchdown receptions.

The Bobcats (0-1) travel to crosstown rival May River next Friday.
