Sharks Headline All-Lowco Boys Soccer Team

Perhaps no sport has found the Lowcountry soil more fertile than soccer, and the impressive talent that has sprouted is on display with the second annual All-Lowco Boys Soccer Team.  With Class 3A state champion May River leading the way, along with state runners-up Hilton Head Christian Academy and Beaufort Academy, Lowcountry teams made a lot of noise in the postseason.

Here’s our list of the cream of the crop in this talent-rich region.

COACH OF THE YEAR
Misael Garzon, May River

In three short years, Garzon has built May River boys soccer into a powerhouse, and now the Sharks have the state title to prove it. After going 1-1-1 in the season-opening Charleston Shootout, the Sharks lost only twice more — once in overtime and once in a penalty shootout — and made a remarkable run through the Class 3A playoffs, culminating with a dominant 6-2 win over Indian Land for the championship.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR
Mikey Chappelear, May River

Like his coach, Chappelear is a repeat pick for the area’s top honor after leading the Sharks to a state championship. The USC Upstate signee recorded a goal or an assist in 18 of the 21 games he played, including seven multi-goal games (four hat tricks) and six games with multiple assists. He racked up 11 goals and six assists in May River’s five playoff games.
