Youth Baseball: Bluffton Teams Drop O-Zone Openers

It was a tough day for the Bluffton teams on the opening day of the Dixie Youth Baseball O-Zone (11-12) State Tournament on Saturday at Oscar Frazier Park.

District 8 champion Bluffton National was blanked 4-0 by Union County during the tournament’s opening round of games, and host team Bluffton American lost 8-3 to Hartsville Northern, dropping both teams into elimination games Sunday.

Bluffton National couldn’t get the bats going in their opener, managing only two hits against Union. Ryan Goll and Tyler Wolfe each had a single for National, but they were stranded by a Union pitching staff that combined for six strikeouts and only one walk.

Bluffton American also had a tough time getting the offense going against Hartsville Northern until it was too late. American was down 8-0 before Miles Fry’s two-run homer in the fifth, and they added another run in the sixth on Nico Martucci’s RBI double. Martucci and Talon Putnam each had two hits.

Both Bluffton teams face elimination games at 1 p.m. Sunday, as National will face Sumter and American will take on Greenwood.
