Hilton Head Prep opened its best-of-three SCISA 2A playoff series against Colleton Prep with a 12-8 home victory Monday.
The Dolphins watched most of a 10-1 lead dissipate during Colleton Prep’s six-run fifth inning before closing out the win.
“What a rollercoaster of a game that was,” HHP coach Chris Wells said. “Somehow, someway our group just gutted out that victory.”
Gage Hurlbut was 4-for-5 with three doubles, three runs, and three RBIs to lead the Dolphins, while Tommy Stauffer was 3-for-4 with three runs, Connor McDonnell was 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, and Trevor Weldon was 1-for-2 with three RBIs.
Stauffer was credited with the win, allowing six runs (five earned) over 4 1/3 innings with three strikeouts.
The Dolphins (15-4) travel to Colleton Prep at 5 p.m. Tuesday hoping to close out the series.
