HS Softball: Dolphins Go Winless At Byrnes Tourney

Battery Creek went 0-3 against tough competition at the Byrnes Invitational on Saturday.

The Dolphins lost to Hillcrest (7-1), Broome (6-5), and Dorman (7-0).

The game against Hillcrest was tied 1-1 before the Rams scored three runs in the fifth and three in the sixth to break it open. Emily Crosby, Alexis Ortiz, and McKenzie Young each had a hit for the Dolphins, and Ortiz took the loss, allowing six runs (three earned) over 5 2/3 innings with six strikeouts.

Battery Creek rallied for four runs in the fifth inning against Broome to tie it at 5, but the Centurions won it with a run in the bottom of the inning. Ortiz and Bailey Emmert each had a hit and an RBI, and Emily Crosby and Journeigh Doray each added a hit. Ortiz was tagged with a hard-luck loss, allowing the unearned run in the fifth to spoil a strong 2 2/3 innings of relief in which she struck out four.

The Dolphins again struggled defensively in the loss to Dorman, as four errors led to five unearned runs. Ortiz again took the loss, allowing seven runs (two earned) in 3 1/3 innings with six strikeouts. Young was 2-for-2 and Emmert added a hit for the Dolphins.

Battery Creek (1-7) travels to May River for a key Region 8-3A matchup at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
