John Paul II boys soccer wrapped up a solid showing at the Capital City Cup on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Buford and a 4-0 loss to group winner Hartsville.
Sebastian Laverde scored both goals for the Golden Warriors against Buford, getting assists from Marcello Vera and Gabe Orta-Carrillo.
Laverde scored all three of JPII’s goals in the tournament. Freshman goalkeeper Evan Slusne also had a strong showing in his varsity debut, playing 200 of the 240 minutes in goal and making 21 saves.
“Several new players and reserves stepped up in a big way, with several players out with illness and injury,” JPII coach Matt Dakolios said. “It was a great showing from our boys.”
JPII travels to Calvary Day in Savannah on Thursday.
