John Paul II’s boys went toe to toe with Columbia High School in their season-opener Thursday, playing to a 1-1 draw in the first game of the Capital City Cup in Columbia.
Columbia scored in the fifth minute, but freshman goalkeeper Evan Slusne made eight saves to keep the Capitals off the board the rest of the game. JPII’s Sebastian Laverde scored the equalizer off an assist from Marcello Vera in the 55th minute.
JPII (0-0-1) plays twice Saturday, facing Buford at 9 a.m. at Chapin High School and taking on Hartsville at 2 p.m. at Irmo High School.
