Colleton County scored the go-ahead touchdown with 3:11 left and held on for a 35-28 win over Hilton Head High in both teams’ Region 7-4A opener Saturday.
Trakell Murray’s 25-yard touchdown run put the Cougars ahead, and Jackson Morelli’s interception stopped the Seahawks’ attempt at a game-tying drive in the final minutes.
Colleton County’s Shykeim Chisholm opened the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter, but the Seahawks answered with a quick scoring drive capped by Gaston Moore’s 22-yard touchdown pass to Sterling White.
Murray scored from 12 yards out to put the Cougars back on top with 1:31 left in the first quarter, and Kylee Hart added a 1-yard TD run to make it 21-7. Gaston Moore threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Bradley Moore with 2:19 left in the half to get the Seahawks within 21-14 at the break.
Diante Richard’s 10-yard TD run pulled Hilton Head High even midway through the third quarter, but Chisolm broke a 57-yard TD run on the ensuing drive to put the Cougars back in front. Richard scored again on a 4-yard run to tie it with 2:38 left, but Colleton County shut out the Seahawks the rest of the way and Murray scored the game-winner.
The Seahawks (4-3, 0-1) travel to Beaufort High next Friday with a playoff spot on the line. The Cougars (3-4, 1-0) will host Bluffton with the winner becoming the frontrunner to claim the region title.
