John Paul II scored two touchdowns in a span of seven seconds in the fourth quarter to pull away for a 35-20 win at Carolina Academy on Friday.
Zach Doe rushed for 225 yards and four touchdowns on 27 carries, and Freddie Aiken added a touchdown run and had a big night on defense for the Golden Warriors. Aiken made 12 tackles, including a fourth-down stop on the goal line that helped preserve a 21-20 lead in the second half.
Doe scored a pair of first-half touchdowns, including a 74-yard run, and the game was tied at 14 at halftime. Doe’s 5-yard run and Ben Richardson’s extra point gave JPII a 21-20 lead with 5:31 left in the third quarter, and Aiken’s fourth-down stop preserved the lead.
Aiken then capped a long drive with a 1-yard TD run for a 27-20 lead, and the Golden Warriors recovered a pooch kick on the ensuing kickoff, setting up Doe’s 20-yard TD run to put it away.
JPII (2-2) hosts Bethesda Academy next Friday.
