John Paul II led for most of the second half before a late touchdown lifted visiting Cardinal Newman to a 16-14 win over the Golden Warriors on Friday.
Zach Doe rushed for 229 yards and two touchdowns for JPII, but Cardinal Newman made a big fourth-down stop with just over four minutes left and then connected for a 55-yard touchdown pass to take the lead with 3:25 remaining.
Doe broke touchdown runs of 80 and 52 yards, and Mark Knight had a pair of interceptions for the Golden Warriors.
JPII (0-1) travels to Thomas Heyward next Friday.
